For more than three years, the Robert Kenneth Jones Journal was a beloved twice-weekly fixture at ChaplainUSA.org.

Bob’s column became a touchstone for readers who relied on his steady voice, gentle humor, deep faith, and unique gift for finding profound meaning in the everyday.

When Bob passed away on July 14, 2020, with his wife Bonita by his side, he left behind an extraordinary archive of journals, podcasts, and stories—a testament to a lifetime spent helping others heal.

The Next Right Thing is a comprehensive retrospective of that legacy. Beyond simply archiving his original work, this project explores the core themes woven throughout his writing and speaking.

This collection is a heartfelt celebration of Bob’s life's work. Though he is no longer with us, we hope his words continue to inspire the courage, resilience, and faith he nurtured in so many. With special thanks to Bonita Jones for her unwavering support, it is a privilege to share Bob’s world with you.

A new retrospective collection

Bob left us with a lifetime of words, but the essays that follow belong to a new chapter.

Written after his passing, this series of original reflections takes a step back to view the life he lived and the lessons he left behind through a wider, more holistic lens.

These four collections explore Bob’s unique gift for celebrating existence and his deep conviction that our struggles are the wellspring of true healing. Each post serves as a different doorway into how he saw the world, built by those who are still listening to his voice. Let's dive in.

Behind the Scenes

A Tribute to Bob Jones

Bob Jones lived everyday with a sense of loving gratitude.

For Bob, the world was a sacred place and to sing its song was his calling.

Yesterday his life’s work ended. His wife Bonita called to inform me Bob had suffered a stroke. He passed away a short time later.

His work, his youthful spirit and his compassion will be greatly missed by his wife, children and grandchildren – as well as those who followed his writing online.

Bob and I had become close over the years.

Although we never met in person, we undoubtedly crossed paths in our youth. We both hail from the same hometown – Danville, Illinois, a place he often wrote about in loving detail.

It was, after all, his writing that first caught my eye. I happened upon his blog by chance. Halfway through the first post, I was determined to share what I was reading with a greater audience.

And so we did and will continue to do.

Robert Kenneth Jones Journal has reached people around the world. To read Bob's writing is to apprehend what is in evidence all around us – “The Kingdom of the Father spread upon the earth, yet men do not see.”

Bob saw it. He held it up and marveled at its beauty. Thank you for sharing that vision with us.

Bob Jones spent more than four decades quietly innovating in the treatment of addiction and the wounds of childhood abuse. He grew up in Danville, Illinois, a place he returned to again and again in his writing.

His reflections on compassion, kindness, healing, and wisdom continue to find new readers here. He is survived by his wife, Bonita Jones.

He signed off, always, the same way: "Fair winds and following seas. I'll be seeing you."
